NC Miata 2.5L Swap
The swap that built our reputation. Over 100 completed and counting.
How It Started
I purchased my first Miata, the Blueberry, back in 2015 and immediately joined the Houston Miata Club to learn more and get involved in the community. After about a year my engine started knocking and I had a decision to make. I had read a few times online about this rumored 2.5L motor swap that could be done, but there was exceptionally limited information on how to actually do it.
With what I could find through internet research, I started asking questions and digging into every detail I could track down. Years later, after completing a few swaps for customers, I wrote up instructions covering part numbers, torque specs, tips, and tricks to help others successfully DIY their own swaps.
Building the Community
A fellow enthusiast created the 2.5L Swap Club page on Facebook and put me in charge to build a community knowledge base where others could discuss and learn. It started with just a text document, but after seeing people struggle I moved to making a slideshow of directions. Then I made a POV video of assembling a customer's engine. That took off and seemed to help many more people, since different people have different learning styles.
Several years later I started recording all of my engine builds for transparency to customers and for my own records. I've also taken it upon myself to do on-camera failure analyses of customer cars, whether we built them or not, because understanding why engines fail helps us avoid it in the future.
I can neither take credit for inventing the 2.5L swap nor creating the Facebook page, but I take credit for building the community and the spread of free knowledge on how to perform these swaps.
